Ethno England was an intercultural project bringing together young musicians from diverse backgrounds to share their music with one another and the public through workshops and concerts. From the first gathering in Sweden in 1990, the Ethno World has grown into a global network of projects spanning more than 20 countries, overseen by Jeunesse Musicales International (JMI). Ethno was first run in England from 2003-2008 in York, and revived in England by Tandem Collective in 2015. The core of the project was a 10-day residential gathering, bringing together up to 25 (in the case of Ethno England) musicians aged 18-30 to take part in peer-to-peer workshops. Each participant taught a tune or song from their culture, and they then worked together to bring these pieces together into a set which they then performed at venues and festivals. Between 2015 - 2019 Tandem Collective hosted a gathering every June, to coincide with Tandem Festival. The organisation also developed various related activities, including professional development trainings for music leaders, a UK-wide tour of the ensemble (2018), and a music production course based on similar principles of peer-to-peer learning and transmission of traditional music (Folkatron).
